Once Upon a Book ~ Rumble in the Jungle

Art Activity ~ Jungle Safari Vest

Materials Needed:
* Brown Paper Bag
* Markers, crayons or paint

{I could not get McKenzee to hold still for a pic so her 4y/o big sister, Rylee, filled in}

To make:
* Cut holes for head and arms
* Have child decorate


Games

Go on a Jungle Safari
* Hide jungle animals around house or outside
* Have child put on their jungle safari vest
* Give child binoculars and a camera
* Have children search for jungle animals

Pretend to be jungle animals
* Call out a jungle animal.
* Have your child act like that animal by moving like it and making the correct animal sound

* Fill a tote with shredded paper
* Hide jungle animals
* Have children find all the jungle animals

Once Upon a Book ~ Mortimer's First Garden

Summary: Mortimer decides to plant his last sunflower seed in hopes of a 'springtime miracle'.  After lots of work, patience and trusting in God a plant emerges from the ground.

Art Activity ~ Tissue Paper Sunflower

For this activity you will need:
* Yellow and Green Tissue Paper
* Seeds
* Glue
* 1 Piece of white card stock {you can use a different color of card stock}

To make:

* Color the pieces of the sunflower
* Glue together onto piece of card stock
* Tear up and wrinkle tissue paper
* Glue tissue paper on to the flower {yellow}, stems {green} and leaves {green}
* Put some glue all over the center of the flower; Have child put seeds on the glue

Sensory Fun

* Fill a tote with shredded brown paper {can be bought at the Dollar Tree}
* Hide lots of seeds in the paper
* Give child tools for digging and a jar {or bowl} to put their seeds in as they find them

Counting Seeds

* Write numbers on pieces of paper; attach to craft sticks
* Place craft sticks with numbers into plastic cups
* Have child put the correct number of seeds into each cup

Once Upon a Book ~ Welcome Spring

Summary: Spring brings lots of fun for little ones to experience.


Fingerplay ~ Raindrops

Raindrops, raindrops!
Falling all around (move fingers to imitate falling rain)
Pitter-patter on the rooftops, (tap softly on floor)
Pitter-patter on the ground.
Here is my umbrella;
It will keep me dry.(hands over head)
When I go walking in the rain,
I hold it up so high. (raise hands in the air)

Pitter-patter, raindrops!
Falling from the sky; (wiggle fingers to imitate falling rain)
Here is my umbrella
To keep me safe and dry! (hands over head)
When the rain is over,
And the sun begins to glow, (make a large circle with arms)
Little flowers start to bud, (cup two hands together)
And grow, and grow, and grow!

Art Activity

For this activity you will need:

* 1 Piece of white card stock cut into cloud shape
* Blue construction paper cut into 1" strips
* Glue
* Cotton Balls
* Yarn

To make:

* Put some glue all over the cloud
* Let your child use a Q Tip to spread the glue all over
* Place cotton balls all over glue
* Tape blue strips on to the back at different heights (you could glue them)
* Punch 2 holes in the top a few inches apart
* Put yarn in each hole and tie into a knot on each side for hanging

Sensory Fun

* Make colored ice cubes by adding a drop of food coloring to the water in each section of an ice cube tray
* Fill up water table and put the frozen ice cubes in it for child to play with

Blowing Clouds

* Give child a straw and cotton ball (cloud)
* Have them blow through the straw to move the cotton ball

Sorting Clouds

You will need:

* Colored marshmallows
* Colored sorting  bowls

Have child sort marshmallows into correct colored bowl.

* Write different numbers on blue pieces of paper (for McKenzee I used numbers 1 - 6)
* Have child count and place the correct number of cotton balls (clouds) on to each numbered piece of paper

* Have child throw colored bean bags into the correct color bowl.

Summary: After a Mommy builds a nest for her eggs, 3 little ducklings are born.

Five little ducks
Went out one day
Over the hill and far away
Mother duck said

But only four little ducks came back.

ART ACTIVITY

For this activity you will need:

* Easy shapes duck craft from First School
* Crayons, Glue, Scissors

To make:

* Have child color each part of the duck.  While doing this talk about the different shapes.
* Cut out the duck.
* Have child glue it together.

Fill up a water table or tote with some water and let child play in it with ducks that float.

For this activity you will need:

* Duck candy molds (can be found at Hobby Lobby)
* White Chocolate
* Yellow Food Coloring
* Lollipop Sticks

To make:

* Melt chocolate
* Add food coloring to melted chocolate and stir
* Put melted chocolate in the candy molds
* Add a lollipop stick to each
* Let dry

MOTOR SKILLS

Pretend to be a duck ~ The idea is to have your child bend down until almost sitting on the ground and flap their arms and quack.  However, once McKenzee saw the duck whistle (bought at Big Lots) she was done waddling.

Duck Counting ~ Print these ducks and pond mat; Count ducks one at a time and place on pond.

Play a game of lucky ducks.  Help child match the shapes.

My Valentine Story: Giving My Heart to God

Summary: Valentines are fun to make and give. They tell people we love them. Who loves all of us? God, of course. "How can I give God my heart? Loving him is where I'll start."

Heart Number Clapping Song


Tune: If you're happy and you know it


Print off this big pink heart (from childcareland.com) and glue it on to a craft stick. Hold it up for the kids to see while singing.

If you see a big pink heart clap two times (clap clap)
If you see a big pink heart clap two times (clap clap)
You saw a big pink heart and you clapped two times.....
Let's do it all again

Repeat with numbers that you choose. At the end instead of singing "Let's do it all again" sing "And now our song is done."

Art Activity
Cookie Cutter Heart Prints

For this activity you will need:

  • White paint
  • Different sizes of heart cookie cutters
  • 1 piece of red construction paper

To make:
  • Dip heart cookie cutter into white paint
  • Press it on to the red paper

Sensory Bin

For this activity you will need:
  • 1 or 2 bags of conversation heart candy
  • Small bin or tote
  • Your choice: bowls, cups, spoons for child to use to play with the candy

Put the candy in the tote and let your child play with it! Encourage them to use a spoon to scoop up a few pieces of the candy and put in a separate bowl or cup.

Use heart shaped cutters to make hearts out of pancakes, rice krispie treats, cheese to go on a sandwich or on top of a bowl of soup or any other way you can think of.

Motor Skills

Heart Magnetic Mosaic

For this activity you will need:

  • Cookie Sheet 
  • Heart Magnetic Mosaic Page (printed from Making Learning Fun)
  • Magnetic Pom Poms or magnets (to make the magnetic pom poms simply glue a pom pom to a circle magnet. Let it dry for 12 - 18 hours before using).

Have child put the magnetic pom poms on the red circles to make a heart!

Pink and Red Color Sorting ~ Have your child put all the red hearts on the red mat and all the pink hearts on the pink mat. You can print the red and pink hearts and mats from here.

Heart Shape Viewer ~ Let your child look through this heart shape viewer

Candy Heart Counting ~ For this activity use this mat (or make your own with whatever numbers you choose) and have your child put the correct number of candy hearts on the circles. For younger children have them pick up one piece of candy at a time and put it on the correct circle on the mat as you count.

Find the Hearts ~ Spread these hearts (or cut some out) around a room and have your child find them and put into a box or bucket!

Make a Memory

Tell your children everyday how much you love them! For the younger ones, teach them to give hugs and kisses. McKenzee Grace is 18 months and loves to give hugs and kisses. This week she also learned how to blow kisses.
