Once Upon a Book ~ Lots of Ladybugs!

Photobucket

Lots of Ladybugs!: Counting by Fives (Know Your Numbers)
by Michael Dahl
Summary: This book is about a little boy who counts the spots on ladybugs. With each page, there are five more spots to count until you reach "FIFTY black spots on their red, red shells." This is a great book to use when teaching skip counting by fives.

Bible Verse

Ladybugs are often seen as one of God’s most beautiful bugs because of their pretty red wings and black spots. However, it is important to know what God says about beauty. Real beauty is from within!

Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight.1 Peter 3:3-4

Craft

We made these cute little ladybugs from simple shapes, google eyes, and paint. Cut three circles (all different sizes). Cut the largest circle (shown in red) in half and add the spots. Use the medium sized circle as the body underneath the wings and the smaller circle as the head. Glue together and add the eyes.

Math

We read through the book multiple times as the boys reviewed counting by 5s. Check out the Living Math Booklist for more books that help review and practice counting by 5s.

File Folder Game

I made the Ladybug Spot Addition game to help them practice basic addition.

Science

We all headed outside for some fun in the sun. We were able to find a few ladybugs. The boys enjoyed letting the crawl all over their hands!

Snack

For a healthy snack, we made ladybugs using apples, grapes, raisins and peanut butter. For a sweet treat, try the OREO ladybugs.

Game

The boys also worked on our Ladybug Letters Alphabet Learning Puzzle Game.
