Week 3: Church Buildings
Bread: Acts 17: 22 - 31
Bite: "The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands.” Acts 17: 24
Believing: Strap your field trip boots on this week: we’re going on church tours of our town! Select a couple of church buildings in town. Consider choosing one “traditional” church with a steeple, pulpit, and pews; one home church; one “contemporary” church with a kitchen, multi-purpose gym; and one other church that might be interesting to your tot.
Explain to your tot that even though God does not live in temples built by hands anymore, Christians have used a lot of money, time, and hard work building churches where they could meet together and serve God. Many times, by looking closely at the church buildings Christians make, we can learn ways to love and serve God.
On your tour, let your tot respectfully absorb the building’s appearance, scent, structure, and purpose. Choose a couple of features to explain to your tot. For example, the steeple is meant to make our eyes look up and remind our hearts to look up to God for help and love; a kitchen is built to feed the Christians who meet in the church as well as any hungry people from the community; a multi-purpose room is meant to help people feel comfortable to learn about Jesus even while they are playing basketball!
By all means, in the comments and on your blog, post photos and notes about your tour! We can’t wait to hear all about it!
