Little Hands-On abc's and 123's - Early Graphing

little handson Abc 123

Do you own pattern blocks?  Besides the usual activity of making pattern pictures with them, we have used them to make simple graphs.  Grab a handful of pattern blocks and sort them.  Then line them up as shown in the photograph and count them.  Discuss, which shape is there more of?  Which shape is there the least of?  Are there the same amounts of any shapes?
Here is another idea for a pre-graphing activity.

If you don’t own pattern blocks, don’t worry.  You can accomplish the same sort of thing by grabbing a handful of Chex mix.  Or mix three or four different kinds of cereals or crackers in a big bowl and then grab a handful of that.

When math is edible, it’s even more fun!

Loving this idea. I think my 4 year old would really enjoy it. I also love how easy the prep is. :) Thanks.

Very timely for us-- we have been learning graphing this week and just got our shipment of pattern blocks today in the mail! Thanks for all your great ideas!

Great ideas! I am working on an assignment for school and am trying to create mini-lesson plans for math. This is very helpful! Thank you!
