Summary: One hot summer day, George and the man with the yellow hat go to the beach. What fun George has at the beach! What fun he has feeding the seagulls! It's fun, that is, until they fly away with something valuable and George must find a clever way to save the day.
Head out to the beach, park or sand box in your back yard and have fun playing in the sand. Make castles, pies and have fun burying each other in the sand. Don’t forget to play in the water if you can.
And I promise nap/bedtime will be a breeze after some time out in the sun.
Don’t miss the rest of the Beach Theme ideas that have been shared at Totally Tots over the last few weeks. We had so much fun.
We play with our LEGO DUPLO Brick Set almost every single day. I am always amazed at the different creations the girls come up with, especially when playing with their Grandpa. This activity was so much fun and it was while creating LETTERS!!
The girls would watch as I was creating each letter and try to guess what it was going to be.This was a fun and interactive way to get them talking about the names of the letters, sounds that they made and what they looked like.
We could put them together to make words…
…and my girls especially loved that I created the letters for their names too!
Older children can even get involved and create their own or copy your letters. Emily was very excited when she was able to use my letters as an example to make her own!
Little Hands-on ABC’s and 123’s is a bi-monthly feature that focuses on practical and simple ideas that you can do at home to help your tot develop their letter and number skills.
We couldn’t find a babysitter. Actually I didn’t look for one. Thus, our children – all four of them – joined us for our 12th anniversary this year.
I did not want to make dinner on this special occasion but I knew that a certain Tot needed to be “learning” before our meal would arrive at our table.
I have three sets of these colorful magnets and have used them for multiple Tot activities. Montessori materials “isolate specific skills and present themselves as attractive, self-contained materials,” according to John Bowman, author of Montessori at Home!
In this case, our workspace was the white tablecloth.
I made several magnet pairs, and Naomi pulled them apart.
She was delighted to repeat this process again, and again, and again.
The repetition of this activity opens brain nerve connections and builds brain architecture, thus developing a strong brain and laying a foundation to attain mastery in a multitude of skills.

Beach Music ~ Slippery Fish
One of the things that my boys really love about the beach is getting to look for all the different animals. Usually we only see dolphins, seagulls, and jellyfish, but that doesn’t stop us from looking for sharks and whales!
Here’s a song that my boys love called “Slippery Fish”. I tried to get them to sing on camera but they refused, so you’re stuck with me.
Lyrics:
Slippery fish, slippery fish, swimming in the water, Slippery fish, slippery fish, swimming in the water
Gulp, Oh, no! It’s been eaten by an…
Octopus, octopus, swimming in the water Octopus, octopus, swimming in the water
Gulp Oh, no! It’s been eaten by a…
Tuna fish, tuna fish, swimming in the water, Tuna fish, tuna fish, swimming in the water
Gulp Oh, no! It’s been eaten by a…
Great big shark, great big shark, swimming in the water, Great big shark, great big shark, swimming in the water
Gulp, Oh, no! It’s been eaten by a…
Big fat whale, big fat whale, swimming in the water, Big fat whale, big fat whale, swimming in the water Gulp! Oh, no! I have a tummy ache!

One sure fire way to make sure that kids want to join in during learning activities is to make the activity appeal to their interests. For example, my little guy is a puzzle fanatic. He absolutely loves them. We've also been working on spelling the names of people in our family. I combined these two things and quickly made Name Puzzles.
Materials:
Sentence Strips (I've seen these at the Dollar Tree, Walmart, and Target, or you could get them at a school supply store.)
Marker
Scissors
Ziploc bag for storage
Directions: Use the marker to write your tot's name on the Sentence Strip.
Cut between the letters. You will want to make different "designs" with your scissors for each cut. For example, wavy lines, jagged lines, curved lines, etc.
Allow your tot to put the puzzle together.
If they need help, make another strip that has their name on it and leave it intact. Allow them to use it to help them find the next letter. They can use it as a reference, or use it to match up the letters by laying the pieces on top.
Other options:
If your child already knows how to spell their name, do this for other names they might need to know~Mommy, Daddy, siblings, etc. Don't forget to add a picture to help them "read" the name!
