Once Upon a Book ~ The Tiny Seed

Photobucket imageThe Tiny Seed
by Eric Carle

Summary: Follow along with the tiny seed as it overcomes a myriad of adverse situations to eventually grow and become a big, beautiful flower.

Bible Verse

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11

Craft

For a fun and practical craft, make your own seed packets. For those not interested in making your own seed packets, you can easily download and print these super cute packets from Keeping Life Creative. All you have to do is cut, fold, and glue!

Snack

We ate lots of different fruits and veggies for snack and we observed and collected the seeds we found inside. We set our seeds out to dry so that we could use them with some of our other seed activities.

Math

The boys sorted the seeds we had collected and dried. Some of the seeds from the different fruits and vegetables were very similar. So, the boys really had to pay close attention when sorting. {In hindsight, I wish I would have thought to give them magnifying glasses to use!!!}

I also gave the boys all of the different seed packets that we had. They had to decide on a way to sort the packets, which ended up being groups with flowers, fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

Science

The boys were very excited to plant some of the seeds they had collected and dried.

Art

The boys also used their dried seeds to create their own works of art! They had fun moving the seeds around to make various shapes, designs, and pictures. (The photos below are of a flower, cursive letter d, a circle, a triangle, and a girl.)

Motor Skills

Most of our activities incorporated the use of fine motor skills. You really can’t handle little seeds without working those little finger muscles!
