Once Upon a Book ~ Barnyard Banter Farm Games

This week for some Farm Theme Fun, you’ll need a farm playset and an Uno Moo game.

Barnyard Banter by Denise Fleming

Book Summary: Meet all the different animals on this farm as you look for goose.  You will learn the different sounds the animals make and where they live.

Farm Playset

Pull out all of your farm animals and barn and have fun pretending using a farm playset {like this Fisher Price Farm} have fun pretending.

Sort the animals by how many legs they have, colors, or even by your child’s favorites.

Uno Moo

Uno Moo is a fun game for older toddlers and preschoolers. The children push the animals into the barn by matching either the color or the animal. The winner is the first person to get all their pieces back into the barn!

Once Upon a Book ~ Big Red Barn Puppet Show

 

“Big Red Barn” by Margaret Wise Brown

 

Book Summary: The story is very simple. It’s about a day in the life of the animals on a farm. Each animal is introduced as you read about the happens in and around the big red barn.

Farm Puppet Show

 

1. Make some animal puppets {I used these from DKLT}
   
2. Get or make a puppet show stage {We have the Guidecraft Tabletop Puppet Theatre, but you can make one yourself}

We used our pieces for “Old MacDonald” and also a guessing game. I would give out clues/riddles and my little guy would put up the animal he thought was the answer. These pieces would also be good for “Farmer in the Dell”.

 

That’s it!! Just have fun playing together and acting out the story. Have your little one act out the story as you read it from the book.

Once Upon a Book ~ Barnyard Banter Math

This week you’ll need a farm puzzle, a pencil and a connect the dot page.

Book Summary: Meet all the different animals on this farm as you look for goose.  You will learn the different sounds the animals make and where they live.

Puzzles

Any farm puzzles will do. We have the Harvest Farm puzzle from Melissa and Doug. We have a few other favorites from the past: the Barnyard Knob puzzle, the chunky farm puzzle and the jumbo farm knob puzzle!

Connect the Dots

I found this sheet at Making Learning Fun and there are other animals to choose from as well. Have your child start at one and connect the dots in order until the picture is finished. If they want to have them color in the picture.

Once Upon a Book ~ The Big Red Barn Art Ideas

This week you’ll need some construction paper, cotton balls, markers, scissors, one googly eye {optional} and glue to make some fun farm animal crafts!

Book Summary: The story is very simple. It’s about a day in the life of the animals on a farm. Each animal is introduced as you read about the happens in and around the big red barn.

Cotton ball sheep

1. Draw a sheep outline
2. Glue cotton balls on the outline for the wool

Handprint Rooster

{Idea from No Time for Flash Cards}

1. Draw a chicken outline
   
2. Trace your little one’s hand on one piece of construction paper {you’ll cut more from this one pattern}
   
3. Let your little one color the chicken while you cut out the hands (5-8)
   
4. Cut the chicken out
   
5. Glue the hands on the chicken
   
6. Cut out a beak and legs and glue them on
   
7. {Optional} add googly eye

What's in the Tub? ~ Farm Sensory Bin

 

This month's theme is Farm. Here are a few simple ideas of what to include in your bin for your Tot to explore!

 

Goodness, I might have gone overboard this month! I couldn't fit everything in the bin to photograph! But that just means it was more fun, right?! My tot said, "YES!"

 

What's included:

• metal trough-like bin
• John Deere 5-piece set
• John Deere semi with combine
• Jumbo Farm Counters
• Toob Farm set
• Alex Toy Wooden Stringing Set
• small boxes made into animal pens
• hay
• grass
• oats
• wheat berries
• chicken feed
• sugar cubes
• Big Red Barn board book (A well worn and loved book in our house.)

 

We found so many possibilities for play and exploitation with this bin!

• sorting colors
• sorting and counting animals
• lacing with the Wooden Stringing Set (Lydia loved this part!)
• What do animals eat? (She loved pouring and scooping the grains and tasting the sugar cubes!)
• What do farmers plant and grow? (We talked about their crops and how wheat berries are ground to make flour for baking.)
• We made animal sounds.

 

 

We sang several farm themed songs while playing too.

• Old MacDonald Had a Farm
