Now I Know My ABC’s ~ Nn is for Nap

The Napping House by Audrey Wood

Summary: Grandma, little child and the family pets are all napping peacefully until the tiny flea wakes them all up. A fun, cumulative story that begs to be read again and again.
Letter Activities:

After reading The Napping House we talked about what time of day we usually sleep (the night). Is the sun out at night? (no) What is out at night? (moon, stars, owls, bats etc.) Then we reviewed some of the things we learned about the moon from the last letter lesson. Next I gave my girls a flashlight and had them go on a hunt for the letter Nn. (I had written the letters on paper and hung them in a dark room).

They shone their flashlights around the room until they found a letter. When they found the letter they had to make the letter sound in order to take the card off the wall. They also discovered they could make shadows and had fun coming up with various shadow creations.

We went over our letter N poem and handwriting sheet. My daughter usually traces the letters with her finger first and then traces with either a crayon or a big chunky pencil. 
Theme Activities:

I printed out the characters from The Napping House and we retold the story in the correct sequence.

Next we talked about animals that sleep during the day and animals that sleep at night. Animals that are awake at night are called nocturnal animals. Animals that are awake during the day are called diurnal animals.

Then we practiced matching the correct animals onto the right mat. After we had done that activity several times (over a course of a couple days) we sorted the whole collection of animal counters on the day/night mat. You can find the downloads for this activity on my ABC page under the Letter N printables.

Shannon wrote about a daytime/nighttime animal cut-n-paste sheet in a previous Totally Tots article. This would be a nice additional activity to include in this unit too.

Big Al by Andrew Clements

Summary: Big Al is one of the most friendly fish…but he is big and not as pretty as the other fish. When a net drops into the ocean to catch all of his friends, Al has a chance to show his friends how much he cares.

What You’ll Need:

• light and dark brown craft foam
• pantyhose
• scissors
• glue/tape
• pencil

How to Make the ‘n’ net:

1. Cut the letter ‘n’ from a piece of dark brown foam. We used a piece that was 2” x 2”.
2. Cut a long strip of light brown foam to use as the handle for the net.
3. Cut the foot end off a pair of pantyhose {or knee highs}.
4. Glue the pantyhose to the end of the ‘handle’.
5. Lay the letter ‘n’ on top of the net and glue in place.

In My Nest

Summary: This layered book with little finger puppet is sure to keep your little ones attention while you look at the little bird’s home.

What You'll Need:

• Brown, orange and light blue or white foam sheets/construction papers
• Raffia {or thinly shredded paper bag/construction paper}
• Scissors
• Pencil {to outline/trace letter} 
• Marker/Pen
• Googly eye
• Glue

How to make the 'N’ Nest:

1. Trace and cut an uppercase 'N' out of the brown foam sheet or construction paper. I used a foam sheet that was about 4" x 5" in size.
2. Using the blue and white foam, cut out several small white eggs and a blue bird. I had a little piece of orange that I used for a beak as well. 
3. If you don't have raffia on hand, have your little one snip brown paper to use as a 'nest'. I also used a piece of brown construction paper to form a ‘nest’ shape to glue the raffia onto.
4. Glue the raffia/paper into the nook of the letter 'N'.
5. Add your eggs and bird to finish your letter 'N'.
